William Hill Illinois Sportsbook promotions

If you’re new to sports betting, you’ll want to pay attention to the promotions that sportsbooks offer throughout the year. It’s great when they have offers for new users, but it’s also important that they continually reward customers for their patronage.

With that in mind, here are a few of the William Hill online sportsbook promotions you can expect to see throughout the year:

  • NFL: During the season, William Hill has a First TD Boost promo for select games. It gives you 50% of your bet back if your chosen player doesn’t score the game’s first touchdown but does get into the end zone later in the game.
  • MLB: William Hill’s past baseball promotion rewards you depending on how the team you placed a pregame moneyline wager on does at the plate. For this promo, you need to bet at least $50, and then if your team wins you get a free bet worth $1 for every single plus $2 per double, $3 per triple, $5 per home run and $20 per grand slam by hitters on your team.
  • NBA: During the 2020 NBA playoffs, William Hill rewarded bettors with free bets based on the performance of the players on their selected moneyline teams. You need to make a $50 wager. For every point that’s more than 20 scored by your team, you’ll receive $1 toward a free bet. For example, if one player scored 27 and another on your selected team scored 35, you would get a free bet for $22.
  • NHL: In a similar promo, William Hill offered bettors $5 as a free bet for every power play goal the NHL team they placed a moneyline wager on scored in selected games. In this promotion, you only needed to make a $35 moneyline wager. And if your team had a good game on the power play, you could win a $15 or $20 free bet.
  • College Football: With scoring in college football continuing to go up, this promo on the William Hill app has been great. For select games you could receive a $5 free bet for every touchdown of 10 yards or more by your selected team. All that was required is that you place a spread wager of $50 or more.

At William Hill online sportsbook in Illinois, you can expect to see these or similar promotions throughout the year, giving you the potential to add to your winnings.

Is William Hill legal in Illinois?

Yes, both William Hill’s retail and online sportsbooks are legal in the state of Illinois. The retail sportsbook began operations in August 2020, while the online sportsbook launched in September 2020.

Sports betting as a whole was legalized in the state when Gov. JB Pritzker signed his name to the Sports Wagering Act in June 2019. Then, in March 2020, the first legal sports bets were made in the state.

Under Illinois sports betting law, you are required to sign up for sportsbook accounts in person. Most of the process can be done remotely, but it must be finished at the operator’s partner casino. For William Hill, that’s Grand Victoria Casino at 250 S Grove in Elgin.

Also, be aware that while betting on college sports is legal in Illinois, you cannot bet on any events involving colleges or universities in Illinois.

How to create a William Hill account in Illinois

To sign up for a new William Hill Illinois sportsbook account, you must follow a few steps, with the final step being a visit to the retail sportsbook at Grand Victoria Casino in Elgin:

  1. Download the William Hill app, which is available for iOS and Android devices. You can follow our links to make sure you download the correct app. On both Android and Apple devices, you’ll likely need to accept security permissions to download and then install the app.
  2. After the app has been installed on your smartphone or tablet, you can open it up and click the “Register” button located at the upper-right corner.
  3. Then you will fill out all the necessary information, such as your name, address, email, birthdate and the last four digits of your Social Security number.
  4. On the second page of the sign-up process is where you will enter the promo code LEGALRF. While signing up, you also must select and answer two security questions and create a password.
  5. The final step is visiting the Grand Victoria Casino to complete your account registration.

William Hill Illinois app

The William Hill sports betting app for Illinois is free. You can install it on iPhones and iPads as well as Android phones and tablets such as Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy, among others.

Whether you’re using an Android or iOS product, the William Hill app will look and function in nearly identical ways across all devices.

Once you open the sportsbook app, you will see the most popular sports listed first. If you click the arrow on the side of the sport, it will collapse that entire menu and bring the next one to the forefront.

Another nice feature of the William Hill app is the “More Bets” bar that lists the number of wagers that are available for any game on the site. For popular events, such as NFL games, it’s not uncommon to see more than 100 bets for a single game.

William Hill Sportsbook features and benefits

The William Hill app has a lot of things to like about it, but so do other sportsbook apps in Illinois. In this section, we pick out our three favorite features at William Hill:

  1. More Bets Bar: If you’re new to online sportsbooks, you might be unaware of how many bets there can be on individual games. The answer is over 100 for the most popular sports. Because of that, the more bets bar at William Hill Sportsbook is great because it lets you know how many bets there are for games without having to click on them. Often, when lines are first made, there might just be three (moneyline, spread and over/under), so it’s nice being able to see that instantly.
  2. Customer Service: In a perfect world, you would never need to make use of William Hill’s customer support staff. We are confident that if you do need help, the William Hill team will take care of you. For example, the day after creating our William Hill online sportsbook account, we got a text from a representative asking if we had any questions. There also are multiple ways to contact William Hill; you can call, text, email or have a live chat with its service department, every day of the week.
  3. Collapsible Sports Tabs: The way a sportsbook app functions is one of the most important parts of an online sportsbook. William Hill’s app works well. One of our favorite features is the collapsible tabs. For example, if you want to bet on a college football game and you click on the football tab, the first thing that will appear is “NFL Games.” Simply, click on the arrow next to NFL, and all the NFL games will vanish and you’ll be left with college football games. It’s just one of the many things that make the William Hill app one of the better ones in the industry

How could William Hill improve?

While there are a lot of aspects we are pleased with when it comes to William Hill Sportsbook Illinois, there are some things we would like to see tweaked or added. Here’s a look at how we believe William Hill could improve going forward.

  1. Have a Loyalty/Rewards Program: We already have detailed the William Hill bonus offers and promos, but the biggest thing the sportsbook is lacking is a program that rewards regular bettors. Players could earn points based on how much and how often they bet at the sportsbook, and then allow those points to be redeemed for free bets or sports merchandise.
  2. An App That Rotates: It seems like about half the sportsbook apps out there have a rotatable screen. Unfortunately, William Hill falls into the category that doesn’t rotate. The area where this is most noticeable is when using a tablet, especially if you have one connected to a keyboard that keeps your device in the horizontal position. It’s something we would love to see changed.
  3. More Promos for Small-Time Bettors: While William Hill does have a lot of promos, most of them require bets of around $50. We’d love to see more in the $10 or less range for players who don’t like to risk as much money. For example, a handful of DraftKings and FanDuel promos offer forms of risk-free bets of $10 or $20. What makes them great is that players can bet $1 and still take advantage of the promotions. So, here’s hoping William Hill makes similar offers going forward.

Types of bets available on William Hill Illinois sportsbook

With the first legal sports wagers in Illinois being placed in March 2020, there are a lot of people out there who are new to sports betting. It can be intimidating not knowing what the different terms mean. Below is a list of the most common types of sports bets, what they mean and examples of how they work:

  • Moneyline Bets: Think of these as “Who will win?” bets. The odds will tell you which team is favored and determine how much you will win with a correct wager. For example, the Chicago Bulls are playing the Detroit Pistons and the moneyline reads Chicago -250, Detroit +190. Since Chicago is listed with a negative number, that means the Bulls are favored. The -250 means you would need to bet $250 in order to win $100 plus your bet back. As for the +190 for the underdog Pistons, that means a winning $100 wager would net you $190 plus your bet back.
  • Spread Bets: Also known as the spread, the line or betting against the spread. These wagers involve having a handicap applied to the final score of games. Favorites will have points taken away from their total, while underdogs have points added to theirs. For example, if the Chicago Bears are playing the Green Bay Packers, the line might be Chicago -5.5, Green Bay +5.5. So, if you bet on the Bears, for you to win the Bears must win by six points or more. Likewise, if for some reason you wanted to bet on the Packers, they would need to lose the game by five points or fewer, or win outright, to “cover the spread.”
  • Over/Under Bets: In these wagers, William Hill Sportsbook provides a number for various statistical categories (final score, single team score, player stats, etc.) and your goal is to pick whether the actual total will be over or under that value. Let’s say the Chicago Cubs are playing the Chicago White Sox, and the over/under for the game is listed at 8.5. That means you are betting on whether the combined final score will be higher or lower than 8.5. So if the Cubs win 5-4, then bets on the over would win (5+4=9), while under bets would lose.
  • Prop Bets: Props are wagers that don’t have to do with the overall outcome of a game; instead they are more like side bets. They could be on whether a player will homer, score a touchdown, record a goal or maybe even finish with a triple double. Proposition bets also can involve over/unders, for example for a Chicago Sky game there could be a prop bet for Allie Quigley’s point total, it could be set at 15.5, meaning she would need to score 16 points or more for the over prop to pay off.
  • Futures Betting: Futures markets have to do with more long-term outlooks. Instead of betting on one game, futures tend to be for full seasons. Common futures bets are picking the eventual champions at season’s end, predicting the over/under for a team’s regular-season wins or betting on individual players to win MVP awards or lead their league in different statistical categories. For example, if sports betting had been legal in Illinois at the time, and you placed futures bets on the Chicago Blackhawks to win the Stanley Cup prior to the 2009-10, 2012-13 or 2014-15 seasons, you would have been a winner along with the Blackhawks.
  • Parlay Bets: Parlays simply are a combination of multiple bets wrapped into one where each individual outcome needs to be correct in order for you to win. In this dreamworld example, let’s pretend it’s late October and the Cubs and White Sox are squaring off in the World Series, the Bears are playing the Detroit Lions, the Blackhawks are taking on the St. Louis Blues and the Bulls are opening their season against the Milwaukee Bucks. You make a parlay bet involving all four games; you pick the Bears, Bulls and Blackhawks to win and you take the over in the Cubs-White Sox game. For your parlay to win, all those picks need to be correct.
  • Live (In Game) Bets: Live betting is exactly what it sounds like; you make bets while the action is taking place. In game wagering can be anything from whether the Bears will rally from an early 7-0 deficit and win to whether the next basket in a Bulls game will be a three-pointer. Odds constantly change during live betting, so if you see a line you like, make sure you jump on it quick.

Sports you can bet on at William Hill in Illinois

Whatever sport you want to bet on, there’s a good chance you will be able to on the William Hill Sportsbook app.

All the major sports are available, so you can find NFL betting, NBA betting, NHL betting, MLB betting, WNBA and MLS betting at William Hill.

As for college sports, you have your pick from college football and men’s college basketball games. Just remember, under the Illinois gambling law, you can’t bet on any college contests involving teams from the Prairie State.

The action doesn’t stop there, though. You can bet on international soccer leagues, such as the English Premier League and UEFA Champions League. In auto racing, there’s NASCAR and IndyCar. There also are PGA Tour and European Tour golf events. On the mixed martial arts front, you can bet on UFC fights, too. If all that’s not enough, there’s table tennis and more.

Illinois sports teams you can bet on

If you’re an Illinois native, you’re likely aware of all the Chicago pro teams you can bet on at William Hill.

If you’re new to the state or sports betting, here is a roundup of Illinois sports teams you can bet on:

  • Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox (MLB): The Cubs and White Sox are two of the oldest teams in Major League Baseball. Despite the Cubs franchise being in existence since 1876 and the White Sox since 1901, the teams have only managed to win three World Series titles apiece. The Cubs play their home games at the historic Wrigley Field, while the White Sox play at Guaranteed Rate Field.
  • Chicago Bulls (NBA): Only the LA Lakers (17) and Boston Celtics (17) have won more NBA titles than the Bulls (6), although the Golden State Warriors have six as well. The Bulls won all six championships in an eight-season stretch as they were led by Hall-of-Famers Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen.
  • Chicago Sky (WNBA): The Sky’s first season in the WNBA was 2006. Since that time, the team has reached the playoffs six times. The Sky’s deepest run came in 2014 when they reached the WNBA Finals against the Phoenix Mercury. The Mercury swept the best-of-five series, 3-0.
  • Chicago Bears (NFL): The Bears franchise dates back to 1920. The team was known as the Decatur Staleys for one season, then the Chicago Staleys for one season before becoming the Chicago Bears prior to the 1922 NFL season. Chicago won seven NFL championships in the pre-Super Bowl era before winning Super Bowl XX against the New England Patriots, 46-10.
  • Chicago Blackhawks (NHL): The Blackhawks have been in Chicago since 1926 as they are members of the NHL’s “Original Six.” Chicago won its first Stanley Cup title in 1934. The ‘Hawks won the cup five times since, with the most recent championship in 2015.
  • Chicago Fire (MLS): The Fire came out of the MLS gates quickly as the franchise captured the MLS Cup in its debut season in 1998. Sadly, Chicago Fire has not won the MLS title since then. Twice, the Fire lost in the finals (2000 and 2003). The franchise is named after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.
  • College Sports: While William Hill does have odds for college football and men’s college basketball games, Illinois law does not allow for wagering on NCAA events involving Illinois teams. Thus you cannot bet on top schools such as Illinois, Northwestern, Loyola Chicago, Bradley, DePaul and any other colleges and universities within the Prairie State.

William Hill futures betting

Futures betting is one of the more popular forms of sports wagering. Getting to bet on our local pro teams in advance and hopefully cashing in long-awaited winning tickets makes it extra fun. Here’s a look at the futures markets available at William Hill Sportsbook:

  • Cubs, White Sox and MLB: At William Hill, you can bet on the Cubs or White Sox to win the World Series or just the NL or AL pennant. Once the World Series gets underway, you also can wager on the player you believe will win the World Series MVP award. During the regular season, it is likely that William Hill will have odds on the AL and NL MVP awards and for team win totals during the season.
  • Bulls and NBA: Shortly after the 2020 NBA season was over, William Hill already had odds up for the next season’s champ, conference winners and MVP winner. Prior to the 2020 NBA draft, there also were futures for which player would be the No. 1 overall selection.
  • Sky and WNBA: Regrettably, William Hill does not have futures bets for the Sky or the WNBA.
  • Bears and NFL: You can wager on the Bears to win the Super Bowl, the NFC or the NFC North at William Hill. You also can wager on the remaining 31 NFL teams to win the Super Bowl, AFC or NFC and their divisions, as well. There also are futures for whether teams will make the playoffs. As for players’ futures markets at William Hill, you can bet on the regular-season MVP award winner, Offensive Rookie of the Year and the players who will lead the NFL in rushing, receiving and passing yards.
  • Blackhawks and NHL: The NHL futures market at William Hill is not as extensive as it is for football; however, you can bet on the Blackhawks to win the Stanley Cup or represent the Western Conference. You can do the same for the other 30 teams in the league. In the 2021-22 season, you will be able to bet on the NHL’s latest expansion team, the Seattle Kraken.
  • Fire and MLS: While the William Hill Sportsbook app has futures odds for soccer leagues in England, Germany, Spain and other countries, it does not have markets for the Fire or MLS.
  • NCAA Sports: William Hill has futures markets for men’s college basketball and football, but since you cannot wager on Illinois teams, you are not able to bet on any of the local teams winning their conferences or national titles. You can bet on teams outside of the state to win the college football national championship or men’s basketball national title at the end of March Madness, though.

Is William Hill the best sportsbook in Illinois?

It could be. With legal sports betting just starting in March 2020, right when then the COVID-19 pandemic began canceling most major sports, it has made it difficult to declare which sportsbook is the best in Illinois. Based on its history in Europe and the US, though, William Hill is clearly one of the better sportsbooks in the state at this time.

We believe some of William Hill’s top competitors at this time are PointsBet, FanDuel and DraftKings sportsbook. All four Illinois sportsbooks have pluses and minuses. William Hill could separate itself from the crowd by creating a loyalty program to reward its customers.
