Harrah’s Metropolis Casino announced last weekend that it would temporarily shut down because of flooding in the area. The casino closed at 5 p.m. on Sunday with no timetable for an re-opening date. It issued the following message on its website:
“Due to rising water levels on the Ohio River, Harrah’s Metropolis Hotel & Casino is temporarily closed as of 5 p.m., April 6, 2025. We look forward to reopening when it is safe to do so.”
Illinois under flood warning until further notice
The casino is located right on the Ohio River, where the National Weather Service has issued a flood warning “until further notice.” That could mean days or weeks.
As of Tuesday evening, the impact of the flood at the Ohio River reached 47 feet, with property damage on both the Illinois and Kentucky sides of the river.
The National Weather Service is expecting the crest to rise to 48 feet on April 17. A flood stage is considered at 39 feet.
To put the rain into perspective, farmers in Massac County, less than 10 miles from Metropolis, said the area got 10.5 inches of rain. There are places with 10 to 15 feet of water on top of it.
Another Harrah’s location faced similar issues in Las Vegas, where ceiling tiles were damaged. Luckily for the property, the roof did not collapse.
Harrah’s Metropolis Casino is dealing with rising water levels. It remains to be seen the kind of damage the flood has caused.
