There is plenty to bet on these days with the Super Bowl approaching, the Winter Olympics upon us and college basketball, the NBA and NHL in full swing.
And now, add cornhole betting to the list of approved wagers at Illinois sportsbooks.
Cornhole? Bags? Your preference may depend on where in Illinois you’re reading this, as it’s certainly known as ‘bags’ in the Chicagoland area. But yes, DraftKings Sportsbook is now offering cornhole (or bags) odds.
Illinois is one of seven states to approve cornhole betting. Michigan is another Midwest state that has approved it.
So yes, IL is on the forefront of cornhole betting, but you still can’t sign up for an Illinois sportsbook with your phone or bet on Illinois college teams online.
At any rate, the Johnsonville Cornhole Championships take place between Feb. 11-13, which is Super Bowl weekend. You can bet on the winner of the singles and doubles tournaments, and much of the action can be seen on ESPN networks.

Which sports are most popular to bet on in Illinois?
With cornhole betting now legal in the Land of Lincoln, you may be wondering: can it challenge football as the most popular betting sport in the state?
Time will only tell. But in November, which was the most recent revenue report, here were the betting handle splits by sport:
- Football: $257.2 million
- Basketball: $226.6 million
- Parlay: $166.4 million
- Tennis: $39.8 million
- Soccer: $27.8 million
- Other sports: $24.8 million
- Hockey: $23.7 million
- Boxing/MMA: $7.6 million
- Golf: $3 million
- Baseball: $2.6 million
Jokes aside, it will be interesting to see if A) the Illinois Gaming Board specifies cornhole in its report or if it’s lumped into ‘other sports’ and B) how popular cornhole betting becomes.
Even if it’s near the bottom of this list, these sports are still generated seven figures in handle. Obviously, it’s worth noting that volume is not working in cornhole’s favor.
While we don’t know if people will care to bet on cornhole, it is one of the most popular outdoor games in the world. If you’ve ever been to an outdoor gathering in the midwest, it would be surprising not to find some bags and boards there.
Now, you can put your cornhole knowledge to the test by attempting to handicap it.
